Battle of Cajamarca

The Battle of Cajamarca occurred on November 16th, 1532. It was an ambush in which Francisco Pizarro and a small Spanish force captured Atahualpa, an Inca ruler. Spanish forces kill many of Atahualpa's commanders and counselors, and made the rest of his forces flee. The place of this battle was at the great plaza of Cajamarca. This battle presents the beginning of the conquest of the pre-Columbian civilization. According to the historical sources, a Spanish force consisted of: 62 cavalry, 106 infantry, 4 cannons and 12 Harquebuses. The commanders were: Hernando de Soto, Juan Pizarro II, Gonzalo Pizarro, Hernando Pizarro and Francisco Pizarro.

On the other side, the Inca’s army was led only by Atahualpa. It consisted of: 3.000-8.000 unarmed personnel. They lost 2.000 people and 5.000 were taken as prisoners. At the start of the battle, a Spanish force unleashed a gunfire that killed or wounded many of the Inca’s soldiers. After the gunfire, they attacked the Incas. Because the Incas never saw the firearms before, this was a huge shock for them. They offered very little resistance. The main goal of this battle was to capture Atahualpa. Many of his soldiers sacrifice their lives in order to save Inca’s ruler. During the battle Pizarro tried to save the life of Atahualpa, but he was wounded. Soon, the rest of the Inca’s soldiers fled. Atahualpa’s wife, Cuxirimay Ocllo, (she was only 10 years old) witness the whole battle, and she stayed with her husband until he was executed. After, she was taken by Cuzco and change her name to Dona Angelina. Later, she was Pizarro's mistress.
