Cuba has trouble accommodating influx of American tourists

President Obama has recently lifted and amended bans on travel to Cuba for American tourists.  Lifting the travel ban to Cuba (with restrictions) will allow many more Americans to tour the beautiful country and be exposed to a different culture.  The Cuban Tourist Ministry has recorded over three million tourists who have traveled through Cuba this year alone.

Of those three million tourists, an estimated 600,000 were Americans.

With the sudden and overwhelming influx of American tourists, Cuba has had to make accommodations for the newly acquired travelers and expand their tourism industry accordingly.  The Cuban tourism economy is listed as being roughly $2.6 billion annually.  The hospitality sector accounts for a substantial portion of the nation’s economy and provides good wages for those working within the hospitality industry.

If and when the American ban on travel to Cuba is fully lifted and without restrictions, the Cubans could profit by an additional $2 billion in tourism.  Cuba is a poor country with limited space and accommodations and many worry Cuba will become over populated and suffer from poor living conditions as a result of the million plus travelers from America expected each year.  Both the Cuban and American governments need to work together to ensure safety and good living conditions for all in Cuba - the tourists and the native Cubans.
