Where is and what will you see at Isla de las Muñecas?

If you are up to some creepiness and sad background within your tour, you must visit the Isla de las Muñecas (The Dolls Island) just south of Mexico City. Located in the Xochimilco canal, only 28 km from the city, the island is decorated with hundreds of hanging, decomposing, and decapitated dolls.

Over fifty years ago, Don Julian Santana went to an island on Teshuilo Lake in the Xochimilco canals, leaving his wife and children behind. There, a little girl apparently drowned in the lake under mysterious circumstances. Most people, including Don Santana's relatives, say that they only imagined the drowned girl.

However, Don Julian Santana decided to honor the girl in a rather unique way.  He started hanging dolls on trees by the hundreds. Over time, Don Julian turned the island into this creepy land of decomposing dolls.

There are many legends surrounding the island. Some say that the spirit of the girl who drowned lives in the dolls. Some claim to have seen the dolls turn their heads and even open their eyes.

To get to the island, you will take the ferry from Embarcadero Cuemanco or from Embarcadero Fernando Celada.

If you wish to visit the canals, consider budgeting some time as the entire trip might last 3-4 hours. However, if you take a "trajinera" straight to the island, the trip should not take more than two hours.

The island is not too crowded during weekdays, but can get a bit overcrowded during the weekends. Not all boats include the Isla de las Munecas in their itinerary so you must make sure to find one that actually takes you there.  Prices of the boats will vary.
